A 62-year-old widow, Mrs Nkechinyere Ndukwe, has appealed to the wife of the Abia State Governor, Mrs Priscilla Otti, to intervene in an ongoing dispute over her property in Umuahia, which she says is under threat of forceful takeover.
Mrs Ndukwe, a retired school headmistress, alleged that individuals claiming ownership of her residence located at No. 62 Mission Hill have vandalised the building by removing its doors, windows, fence, and other fittings, while also making moves to demolish the structure.
The appeal was conveyed in a “Save-My-Soul” letter issued by the Human Rights Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Umuahia branch, on her behalf and addressed to the governor’s wife.
In the petition, the widow claimed she has been subjected to intimidation by the alleged buyers, who are pressuring her to sign documents indicating that she sold the property to them—an action she firmly denies.
She explained that the house is jointly owned by her, her daughter, and her son, expressing shock over claims that her son had sold the property without her knowledge or consent.
Mrs Ndukwe further lamented that the destruction of key parts of the building has left her exposed and vulnerable, noting that she now lives without basic protection as electrical wiring, burglary proofs, and structural components have been removed.
The NBA Human Rights Committee in Umuahia has called for urgent intervention, urging Mrs Otti to step in and ensure justice, as well as protect the rights and safety of the widow.
