Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after battling stage four cancer.
Hassan reportedly passed away at about 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026, after his health condition deteriorated in recent weeks.
The actor’s death has sparked widespread grief among fans, colleagues and members of the Nigerian film industry, with tributes pouring in across social media.
One of his daughters, Kira Taiwo, was seen in an emotional video struggling to process the news of her father’s death.
“I need to call my sisters. I need to call my family,” she said while crying during an Instagram Live session.
Reports of the actor’s death were also shared by Sebilu Nnajat TV, a platform owned by Islamic cleric Sheikh Al-Fulanny, which paid tribute to the late actor.
“Innalillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. At last, Ogogo is gone. May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdaus,” the platform wrote.
The development came only days after Hassan’s family and management disclosed that the actor had been diagnosed with stage four cancer and appealed for urgent medical assistance.
His family had clarified that it was seeking access to appropriate medical treatment rather than financial donations.
In an earlier appeal, Kira revealed that the family only became aware of the seriousness of her father’s condition about three weeks before his death and had been searching for medical specialists and facilities capable of providing the required treatment.
The actor reportedly received numerous offers of medical, spiritual and other assistance from Nigerians, colleagues and well-wishers following the disclosure of his illness.
Hassan was one of the most recognisable faces in Nigeria’s Yoruba-language film industry, with an acting career that spanned several decades.
He began his career in the 1980s and rose to prominence through his performances in Yoruba-language productions, earning widespread recognition for his distinctive acting style.
He was particularly remembered for his role in the popular 1995 film Owo Blow and went on to establish himself as an actor, filmmaker and director.
His contribution to Yoruba cinema made him a respected figure among generations of actors, filmmakers and movie audiences.
According to a burial announcement shared by veteran actor Jide Kosoko, Hassan is scheduled to be buried on Monday, August 24, 2026, in his hometown of Ilaro, Ogun State.
His death marks the loss of one of the veteran figures who helped shape Nigeria’s Yoruba film industry over several decades.
