The convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been relocated from the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja to a correctional centre in Sokoto State.
The news of Nnamdi Kanu’s relocation to Sokoto was revealed by his lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor.
Ejimakor wrote on his X handle: “Breaking: MAZI NNAMDI KANU has just been moved from DSS Abuja to the correctional facility (prison) in Sokoto; so far away from his lawyers, family, loved ones and well wishers.”
There are fears that Kanu will be held in a prison facility populated by bandits and terrorists who are either convicted or standing trial, since Sokoto is one of their major hubs. The prison is also noted to house very few southerners.
Kanu was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted on all seven terrorism-related charges at the end of a decade-long trial that has inflamed tensions in the country’s southeast.
Justice James Omotosho stated that prosecutors proved his broadcasts and orders to his now-banned IPOB group incited deadly attacks on security forces and citizens.
