Former President Goodluck Jonathan has hinted at a possible return to the political arena ahead of the 2027 presidential election, saying he would “consult widely” following growing calls from supporters urging him to contest.

Jonathan spoke on Thursday in Abuja after thousands of supporters and representatives of political groups gathered at his Maitama residence, calling on him to join the 2027 race.

Addressing the crowd, the former president stressed the importance of patriotism, peace, and credible elections in Nigeria’s democratic process.

“It’s only patriotic citizens that build their nations. Unpatriotic citizens will destroy their nation, take the money to anywhere to enjoy their life. So you must be patriotic,” Jonathan said.

He urged young Nigerians to remain committed to peaceful coexistence and active participation in the electoral process.

“The key thing we need in this country is peace. So as young people, for most of you here, more than 80% of you are very young people,” he said.

“I don’t even know how old some of you were when I was President, but the key thing is peace in this country, and you will continue to advocate for that, and you continue to advocate for peaceful and credible elections in the country, because if we don’t have peaceful and credible elections, most good citizens will not want to get involved in politics.”

Jonathan also encouraged youths to protect their voting rights and remain engaged in shaping Nigeria’s future.

“As youths, you will continue to advocate for that. It’s very dear to us, peaceful elections, and indeed you as young people must continue to be fully involved in the electoral processes, especially your right to vote,” he added.

Reflecting on his international election observation experience across Africa, Jonathan cautioned supporters against treating presidential ambition lightly.

“I’ve observed elections in about 14 or more African countries, some I have been there two times. Presidential race is not a computer game, but I heard you, and I will consult widely,” he stated.

“The most important thing is a Nigeria that young people will have and plan for our grandchildren.”

Although he stopped short of formally declaring his candidacy, Jonathan’s remarks are expected to intensify speculation over a possible political comeback ahead of the 2027 elections.
