Security operatives, in close collaboration with the management of Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, Kogi State, have arrested a 400-level student over an alleged attempted forced cult initiation, physical assault, and threats to life.

The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Adejo Ojonimi, a student of the Department of Economics with Matriculation Number 23EC103, was apprehended by the University Vigilante Service following a formal complaint from a spillover student in the Department of Food Science and Technology.

Trouble started when Ojonimi, who resides in the NTA area behind the campus, allegedly approached the victim and demanded that he join a group he identified as the “Black Axe Confraternity”.
According to the victim, things turned violent after he turned down the invitation. The student alleged that after he refused, he was physically assaulted, injured, and repeatedly threatened with severe consequences if he failed to submit to initiation.

Terrified by the hostile encounter, the victim fled his residence. “Out of fear for my safety, I abandoned my residence and remained in hiding for several days before reporting the matter,” the statement quoted the complainant as having stated.

A preliminary investigation by the university’s Security Unit quickly swung into action, revealing visible physical injuries on the complainant at the time the report was made. During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted to aspects of the assault and threats.

Furthermore, digital evidence nailed the suspect. A thorough check on his mobile phone uncovered conversations with other suspected members of a cult group using the slogan “Egede”, which is widely associated with the Black Axe Confraternity. Information relating to other individuals allegedly connected to the group has since been extracted and documented for further security and administrative action.

The university management confirmed that the suspect has since been handed over to the appropriate security agency for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Salisu Usman, commended the vigilance and professionalism displayed by the security operatives and stakeholders involved in the operation.
Professor Usman reiterated the institution’s zero-tolerance policy towards cultism, violence, and all forms of criminal activity within and around the campus. He issued a stern warning to criminally minded individuals to pack their bags and leave the institution alone.

“Let this serve as a strong warning to students and anyone involved in cult-related activities: steer clear of Prince Abubakar Audu University. We remain committed to providing a safe, peaceful, and conducive environment for teaching, learning, research, and community service,” the statement quoted Usman to have warned.

With the second-semester examinations beginning today, the Vice-Chancellor further urged members of the university community to promptly report any suspicious activities or movements that violate the recently released management security guidelines. He assured the public that all reports would be treated with the utmost confidentiality and seriousness.
