The Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, has signed the state’s Electricity Bill into law, marking a major milestone in the administration’s drive to improve power supply and boost economic growth.
The development was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the Technical Adviser to the Governor on Media, Publicity, and Strategic Communication, Chief Solomon Iorpev.
Speaking on the new legislation, Governor Alia described it as a landmark step toward accelerating economic growth, attracting investments, and driving sustainable development across the food basket state.
He noted that the law will effectively open up the state’s power sector to private investors, promote healthy competition, protect consumers, and expand access to clean electricity for underserved urban and rural communities.
The Governor commended the Benue State House of Assembly for their dedication in passing the bill. He reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to breaking bureaucratic bottlenecks and creating an enabling environment for lasting progress.
While acknowledging that the legislation ought to have been enacted years ago, Alia urged residents to support his development agenda, promising that despite the state’s 50-year history, his leadership is determined to build tangible achievements for future generations.
The signing of the bill follows its passage by the state parliament months ago as part of broader legislative measures aimed at strengthening infrastructure and resource management.
Notably, the new law seeks to establish the Benue State Electricity/Power Management Agency, which will provide a robust framework for localized power distribution and grid management.
