Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist and former presidential candidate, has reacted to reports of mass killings in Jos, Plateau State, where more than 80 people were allegedly killed in overnight attacks.

In a statement shared via his official X account, Sowore described the incident as both tragic and alarming, raising concerns over the continued loss of lives in parts of the country that have witnessed recurring violence.

“Overnight, more than 80 people were reportedly killed in Jos. When a nation’s Defence Minister is more focused on helping a failed ruling party like the All Progressives Congress organise its convention than on safeguarding lives, what outcome should citizens realistically expect?” he wrote.

Sowore criticised the leadership of Nigeria’s defence sector, questioning the priorities of top government officials, particularly the Minister of Defence. He suggested that political engagements appear to be taking precedence over the protection of citizens.

He also pointed to the involvement of government figures in activities linked to the APC, arguing that prioritising party affairs amid worsening insecurity sends the wrong message to Nigerians.

According to him, citizens expect swift and decisive action in response to security threats. He added that the recurring nature of such deadly attacks raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of existing security strategies.

Sowore called for urgent investigation into the incident and emphasized the need for stronger, more effective measures to address the scale of violence reported in Jos.
